Weeks Dye Works is hand-dyed (overdyed): one skein shifts between lighter and darker tones, so a solid DMC can only match its overall color. Numbers are from published conversion charts, listed with their sources in the converter.

Why an overdyed thread never matches DMC exactly

Weeks Dye Works floss is hand-dyed, so one strand moves between lighter and darker tones of its color. A solid DMC can match the overall color but not that movement. In most patterns you won’t miss it. In a sky, a field or a sampler border where the shading is the point, you might.

  • Swap a whole color, not part of it

Use the DMC for every stitch of that color in the pattern. Half WDW, half DMC shows as a line.

  • Check the alternates

When a chart lists two DMC numbers, the shade sits between them. Hold both against the photo of the finished piece and pick one.

  • Want the variation back?

DMC’s variegated colors, or two strands of two neighboring DMC shades in the needle together, get you some of the movement.

  • Mixing brands in one piece

Six-strand cotton from both makers stitches up alike. Our guide to mixing floss brands covers sheen and strand counts.

Know what you already own before you buy

Converting is half the job. The other half is knowing which of those DMC numbers are already in your drawer. The free floss stash tracker keeps your DMC stash in one list: import the spreadsheet you already keep as a CSV, or photograph your skeins and add them from the photo. Check the DMC equivalents against what you own before you shop.

Starting from paper? Print the DMC floss inventory checklist, tick what you have, then import its CSV into the tracker.

Import your pattern

Stitching a pattern that calls for Weeks Dye Works

  1. 1

    Import the chart

Bought the pattern as a PDF? Import it into StitchThis (free) and the grid, the symbols and the key are read for you. How the PDF pattern tracker works.

  2. 2

    Note your DMC swaps

Convert each WDW color here and write the DMC number next to it in the key.

  3. 3

Stitch one color at a time

Highlight one thread and every stitch of it lights up across the whole chart, even one split over several pages.

  4. 4

    Mark as you go

Tap stitches done on your phone, tablet or computer. Your progress syncs, and nothing gets highlighted twice.

Charts split across many pages are covered in our guide to assembling multi-page PDF patterns. Patterns that came as an OXS, XSD or PAT file are covered in cross stitch pattern formats.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official Weeks Dye Works to DMC chart?

Weeks Dye Works published a DMC-to-WDW conversion chart. This page uses it together with other published charts; the converter lists the sources for every shade. Treat any conversion as a starting point and check it against the skein.

Are Weeks Dye Works and DMC floss the same thickness?

Both are six-strand cotton and stitch with the same number of strands. Stitch a few crosses on a scrap of your fabric before you swap a large area.

How many DMC skeins replace one WDW skein?

Fewer than one. Weeks Dye Works sells 5-yard skeins and a DMC six-strand skein is 8 m (about 8.7 yards), so one DMC skein covers roughly what 1.7 WDW skeins do. If a pattern calls for 3 skeins of an overdyed color, 2 DMC skeins are usually enough. The stitches per skein chart gives the exact numbers for your fabric.

Why do some shades say there is no DMC equivalent?

“Too many colors for one DMC” means the maker says the shade changes too much for one solid color to stand in. “No close DMC” is the maker’s own mark that nothing is close. “No DMC published” means no chart we could check gives one. For those, the floss converter still shows the closest DMC by color if you search for a similar shade.

Can I convert every thread in a pattern at once?

Yes. In the floss converter, upload a CSV with a code column (and a brand column if the list mixes brands) and download a spreadsheet with a match for every row. It runs in your browser and needs no account.

Is this chart free?

Yes. The chart, the converter and the DMC color pages are free and need no account. A free StitchThis account adds the stash tracker, the PDF pattern tracker and the pattern maker.
